The International Indian Film Academy awards began on June 3rd 2010 in Sri Lanka. Several prominent stars including its ambassador Amitabh Bachchan did not make it to the event following protests from the Tamil film fraternity.
Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan had cited prior commitments and evaded the IIFA.
There have been widespread reports that Genelia flew down to Sri Lanka to take part in the event, defying the warnings issued by the Tamil film industry. When director Jayam Raja was contacted to find out his stance on casting Genelia in his forthcoming venture Velayudham, he clarified that the actress is in her Mumbai residence and the reports are false.
Genelia also made it clear that she received an invitation to participate in the event when she was shooting for a film in Switzerland but on being briefed about the Tamil film industry’s views on the IIFA being held in SL, she decided to abide by the decision.
Salman Khan, Vivek Oberoi, Ritesh Deshmukh, Bipasha Basu, Shilpa Shetty, Anil Kapoor and Lara Dutta are a part of this event.
